The Requiem Mass of José de Nebra were performed for the first time in 1758 in the occasion of the funeral services of the queen Bárbara de Braganza held on the Salesas Reales de Madrid convent and performed for the Real Capilla along with José de Nebra himslef. Its performance was habitual until the last years of the XIX century in celebractions marked as royal exequies and days of the dead.
In his Requiem, José de Nebra brilliantly combines modern elements, mainly brought form Italy, with other elements characteristic of the Spanish musical heritage such as the classical polyphony with 8 voices and the sporadic use of “cantus firmus” gathering by this the heritage from our greatest polyphonists.
The year 2018 will commemorate the 250th anniversary of Nebra´s death by performing his Requiem in the same place of its debut. The Requiem will be performed by three outstanding Spanish associations specialized in historic performance: the period instrument orchestra “la Madrileña” specialized in Spanish baroque and classism, the “Coro Victoria” specialized in Spanish Renaissance polyphony and the group “Schola Antiqua”, a point of reference in Gregorian chant performance. All of three groups are to be conducted by Maestro José Antonio Montaño.
